Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and we all know how right after Christmas most of us are still working double-time to replenish our bank accounts.
This holiday may not be as expensive as Christmas since most of the spoilage is for your loved ones and most importantly, your one romantic valentine. But the dinner, the outfit, the special activities and tokens of affection can quickly add up to over hundreds of dollars for a single day. So why not make Valentine’s Day more affordable without sacrificing the memories? There are tons of free activities and date ideas that don’t involve spending loads of money to impress your valentine. Here are 8 of my favorite cheap romantic activities.

#1: A backyard picnic and stargazing
If you were intending on making dinner at home, why not bring it out to the backyard with some blankets? A change of scenery doesn’t mean you have to leave the home, many people neglect the space in their backyards. Roast some marshmallows for dessert and eat s’mores while you stargaze.
Picnic Essentials:
- Metal Roasting Sticks: $6.99
- 50mm Telescope: $39.79
#2: A fancy dinner at home
If you’re not the outdoor-type, you can always make dinner at home. But why stop with a homemade dinner? Try a brand new recipe and complete it with things like wine, cheese and olives. Add some candles and enforce a cocktail attire dress code will make this night something special, even if it’s in the comfort of your own home.
Dinner Essentials:
- Sushi Making Kit: $9.99
- Ceramic Fondue Set: $14.99
- Chocolate Dipping Fondue: $11.08
- Marble Cheese Board: $24.95
#3: A romantic spa date
Chances are, all the spas have already been booked (when I worked at a spa, we always booked up at least a month before Valentine’s Day). But this doesn’t mean you don’t have to miss out on the spa experience! Clean up the master bathroom, buy some roses and toss the petals in the bath. Line the tub with tealight candles and make sure to grab some wine and bite-sized chocolates to nibble on in the tub. After the bath, have some massage oils ready by the bed for a sensual massage.
Spa Essentials:
- 50-pack of Tea Lights: $7.91
- Rosewater Jasmine Foaming Milk Bath: $14.79
- Kama Sutra Sweet Almond Massage Oil: $12.49

#4: Sexy game night
Who said a night in had to be boring? If you’re feeling like your love life is a little vanilla, try something new this year and spice some things up with a sexy game night. You’ll probably have a few awkward laughs but will make for a bunch of “first-times,” laughs and memories.
Game Night Essentials:
- Kissable Body Topping: $15.43
- Erotic Dice: $15.99
- XXXopoly: $34.95
#5: Learn a new hobby together
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a dinner date, flowers and chocolates. If you’re the couple who likes trying new things, why not learn a new hobby?
Groupon always has a ton of deals for local activities. Deals and discounts will always be displayed on the homepage!
Hobbies to consider:
- Try each other’s hobbies
- Rock climbing
- Video games
- Surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding
- Dancing
- Music
- Art
#6: Netflix and chill
Binge-watching shows that you both enjoy is probably one of the best ways to bond on a completely different level. Netflix is constantly adding new shows and movies to their catalog, so there’s always something to watch.
If you’ve already watched all the good shows on Netflix, Amazon Video is a streaming service complimentary with Prime memberships that is similar to Netflix. While their catalog isn’t as large, they do have some Amazon-exclusive shows and movies created by Amazon themselves, and a lot of them are growing in popularity.
If you don’t already have Amazon Prime, click here for a free 30-day trial.
#7: Go to the beach
There are tons of things you can do at the beach that are either fun or cheap. If your beach has a pier, you already have a ton of options. If that’s not your vibe, walking along the coast or renting bikes can be a fun activity.
If you have some beautiful natural beaches, taking a nature hike along the rocks can be a fun and serene activity. You may stumble upon a cute grotto or secret spot along the rocks!
#8: Go camping
If you already own camping gear like a tent and sleeping bags, then an overnight or even weekend getaway in the mountains or any other camping areas, a nature getaway is one of the most affordable activities you can do. Pack some food from the pantry and load the truck up with some gas, and you’ve got all the essentials covered.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be expensive. With these 8 ideas, you have plenty of inspiration to make a memorable and romantic holiday this year.
