One of my favorite things about December is dressing cozy and of course, red lipstick.
I normally use Sephora’s Rouge Cream Lipstick in Passion Red together with NYX Lipliner Pencil in Cabaret, but I wanted to try out a brighter shade this time. I dug through my makeup and actually found an unopened Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella from NARS. This was the 2015 birthday gift that Sephora gave out last year, and it’s a pretty shade of bright red. But although I love the creamy formula and its ability to be used as both a pencil and lip color, I don’t know if I would pay $26 for it.
Using drugstore makeup is something I strive for, but the only caveat about it is not having the freedom to test it in-store. It’s a pain having to return/repurchase products if it’s not the right color. However, I’ve found my tried-and-true drugstore staples, and hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I used to use MAC Cosmetic’s Fluidline Eyeliner in Blacktrack, but at $17 I didn’t want to waste it for daily use like going to school or work. Over the years I’ve fallen in love with Wet N Wild’s Creme Eyeliners:
Wet N Wild On Edge by Fergie Creme Eyeliner in Little Black Dress ($4.66) *At my local store the Fergie Collection was replaced with a regular Wet N Wild Creme Eyeliner with its black named Carbon My Reach, but it is literally the same exact product and shade.
Both of these $5 eyeliners stay put literally from early morning to late night with no fade, budge or even raccoon eyes (a savior for oily skin!). I prefer the On Edge Creme Eyeliner just because it has a glass jar that makes the product last longer (and a brush that I actually use to apply lip color haha), but I’m a bit sheepish to admit that I really like the mini angle brush that comes with the Mega Eyes plastic-packaged eyeliner. I use nothing else but that brush to perfect my cat eyes.
There are some things I still buy at Sephora, like my favorite long-lasting foundation by Sephora Collection. Even though it’s $20, it’s much more affordable than most foundations at Sephora. Since I prefer a natural look, I apply foundation as a concealer and then set with powder, so a single bottle can last me over 2 years. In fact, I’m barely finishing my first bottle I’ve ever purchased of this particular foundation.
Let’s talk lashes: I’m not a fan of strip lashes simply due to cost and my inability to preserve them, so I opt for individual lashes. For me, they are much easier to apply and stay put unlike strip lashes, which can start peeling off at the ends. Surprisingly, the 99 Cents Only Store carries these individual lashes by Select Lash for only $1, and the lash glue included is pretty decent. None of my lashes fall off using that glue. I stock up on these babies whenever I see them, just because I have a tendency to toss lashes away after using them.
