It’s funny that as a teenager, no matter where you grow up, you always go through a phase of becoming bored of your own town. So many of my friends and myself included couldn’t wait to become self-sufficient adults and move away from Riverside. It seemed like such a small town with nothing to offer and paled in comparison to big cities like Los Angeles. Ironically, although my friends have moved away, I’ve stayed close to home and grown to fall in love with this little city. There is so much beauty and history in Riverside, and I never realized until recently that this is actually a popular historic destination that people travel to. Who would have known?

Growing up in Riverside, I’ve always taken home for granted, but the older I get I become more and more interested in actually exploring it. I never had any inclination to enjoy Riverside like a tourist, but I’m realizing that there are many great restaurants and sights to see here.

I think that falling in love with the place you grew up is also very similar to falling in love with the person you are. We spend all our life in our bodies and naturally grow tired of ourselves, focusing on the flaws and things we could change, all while comparing ourselves to others. I feel like this feeling of entrapment can also be translated to your environment, which is why many people get bitten by the travel bug to escape their bland and boring surroundings and explore new places.

I think everyone should take the time to explore their hometown whenever they visit family. I feel like many people tend to overlook a lot of the things that many towns have to offer – I know many of my friends did, because I can honestly now say that I love where I grew up. I love the sights, the entertainment, and most of all, culture. I didn’t think this city had much to offer until I took a leisurely stroll around and admired everything around me.

Next time you’re back home, make it a plan to dress up and explore parts of your town you always saw, but never thought to go. You never know what you’ll find!

  1. You look amazing in white. I love that you are getting out of your comfort zone like I am. You look stunning. You can pull off any look, from floral to Gothic, to classy and sophisticated etc…. my twin for sure.. As far as loving my hometown, I can’t say I love Maui, but since I consider my hometown to be Vegas, I have definitely learned to love it since I moved. Being a military wife, I have to learn to love the state I reside in so I agree with you on venturing out to explore. I will be doing lots of it and sharing it with all of you. xo love you sis.
